“Frozen River” (2008)

After her husband takes off in their family vehicle for an unknown destination, Ray Eddy attempts to survive alone, raising two sons, Richard and James, and works part-time at Yankee Dollar, near Saint Lawrence River near Quebec and New York State. One day she witnesses a Mohawk woman driving their family vehicle, she follows and confronts her, finds out that the woman’s name is Lila Littlewolf, and is actively engaged in smuggling illegal immigrants into the United States via a treacherous frozen river. October is of course Domestic Violence Awareness month, which is why we chose this movie about a spunky survivor of domestic violence.  Harriet Miller told an interesting story this past Saturday:  a generation ago, the issue of establishing our local Shelter for Women Victims of Violence came before city council.  One councilman asked, “So you’re telling me if my wife and I have an argument, and things get a little out of hand, and she shows up at this shelter, you won’t tell me where she is?”  When the reply was “yes”, he said “Then I’m against it.”

In 30 years we have made big strides in awareness about domestic violence, and certainly have increased services to women victims and their families, including outstanding local programs for men who batter.  Unfortunately, we haven’t made a dent on how many of us are battered in our relationships.  Wednesday we’ll celebrate all our spunky survivors and officially congratulate new YWCA Shelter Director Cat Voors.  We’ll commit to doing more toward education regarding prevention, and take up a donation for a small special project Cat has in mind for the Shelter.

Ever see a movie, and afterward just need someone to talk to about what you experienced?  Over 2009-10 season, we’ll be showing an
interesting film each month with informal discussion to follow.

This film series is presented as a collaboration between the Cinema Center, Fort Wayne Feminists, AAUW, Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, Gladieux Consulting, League of Women Voters, and Ujima Resources to benefit these and other women-focused organizations.

Films will be shown on the 1st Wednesday of each month at 6:30pm at the Cinema Center downtown (FREE!) with discussion immediately following.  Series starts September 2, 2009.

Brown Bag Series

In an effort to educate the women of Fort Wayne, we are presenting monthly brown bag sessions on topics relevant to all women. Our Fall Series will focus on the basics of feminism and getting beyond the
stereotype of hairy, man-hating lesbians.

September 16: What is Feminism?
October 21: Fort Wayne Feminism—its roots and herstory
November 18: Regional/National Feminisms
January: Global Feminisms

These free sessions will be held the 3rd Wednesday of each month, starting in September and ending in May, and will be held at the Fort Wayne Hedge School office in the Calhoun Center – 2513 S. Calhoun Street. Each session will run from 12:00 noon – 12:45 pm. Feel free to bring your lunch—and
a friend!

The meeting was chaired by Leslie Raymer.

July 11th will be the Three Rivers Festival Parade. The Hedge School will have a project in the parade. It was suggested that it feature Women’s History. Cameo Portraits will be part of the parade. Angie and Emily have been appointed to the committee for planning. Cheryl will make kites for the occasion.

Joan Uebelhoer passed out the minutes from the April meeting. She also asked members to report any memories they have of activities through the Fort Wayne Feminists through the years. These will be included in the Museum/Library we eventually hope to establish. She also passed out information about Pay Equity Day and some statistics about the condition of the equality issue. She talked about Mother’s Day being an anti war day originally. She reported on her work with the Center for Nonviolence. There will be further discussion about working with the Center later on.

Leslie Raymer reported on the work with the Cinema Center to present movies about women and women’s issues starting in September 2009. The Cinema Center, AAUW, Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, and Gladieux Consulting will be contributing to the costs of the events. Hedge School will suggest films. The Cinema Center will choose them. They will be shown on Wednesday evenings. Hedge School Committee members will do the introductions and lead the discussions.

On May 13th there will be a Press Conference at the Library concerning Equal Pay for Equal Work sponsored by AAUW, Fort Wayne Feminists, Fort Wayne Women’s Bureau, and Hedge School. Leslie will work with Sara Patalita on this project.

The meeting adjourned and the members did a tour of the building as a possibility for the Hedge School headquarters. There will be a report on the tour at the next meeting.

Committee reports:
Techy Team: the team is organizing – Andy and Sara
They will develop a survey to gauge interest/ways to engage with local nonprofits. They will have others on their technology committee.

Space and Priorities: Committee visited local building for possible Hedge School use. They reported they thought the space was good. Suggestion was made that the next meeting of the Hedge School Committee be held at that location. Also suggested was that some members of the committee take a field trip to Lansing, Mich. and visit their library/museum. Perhaps a trip to a similar place in Indianapolis could be arranged.

Leslie Raymer and Denice Beights reported that through conversations with Catherine from the Cinema Center, movies concerning women and our issues could be shown at the Center. Perhaps on Wednesday nights starting in the fall and continuing through rest of 2009 and spring of 2010. Someone from the Hedge School committee could lead discussions after the film. Anyone with suggestions of films should give their ideas to Denice. There also might be a monthly gathering for people to discuss issues concerning women, led by members of the Hedge School Committee.

Pay Equity Day is April 28th.

Joan Uebelhoer is going to do the three sessions about Herstory, Socialization, and Plans for Cure with the women’s group at the Center for Nonviolence. Anyone who would like to work with her is asked to contact her.

Leslie announced that the Brochure for the Hedge School activities is almost ready for distribution.

The next meeting will be held May 1st at the proposed building.
